Sergio Ternavasio

Sergio Ternavasio is "one of a kind." His labels are handwritten and in the case of the Nebbiolo, the label reads "Nebiolo" with one b. His explanation: I was too tired to go full bore.

Fortunately, Sergio has the help of his son and daughter who speak English fluently because he does not do much himself. His head and body are constantly with the wines and that is the most essential thing for him.

The historic cellar is located in Neviglie, a stone's throw from Barbaresco. Since the 1600s, Sergio has had his Azienda Agricola del Cavaliere here where previously only grains and vegetables were produced and now wine has been made for over a hundred years. Here you can taste the dedication to the production of Piedmontese wines passed down from generation to generation.

In the cellar where there is a very authentic atmosphere are two large rooms in unbaked brick and Langa stone that house the Barbera, Nebbiolo and Barbaresco. Furthermore, here in steel production still has the Langhe Arneis wines not to mention the Moscato, very popular in this region.

The vineyards for the Barbera and Nebbiolo are located in Neviglie itself, the Barbaresco vineyard is located at the highest point of Treiso.

Sergio maintains the policy that he only produces Nebbiolo and Barbaresco wine in the good vintages. Also that he lets the wines age for more years than what is prescribed in the rule book. Thus, in 2025 we have the wines of vintage 2017 for the Barbaresco.

The Ternavasio family doesn't just do wine production. They also have three rooms in the agriturismo that are available to those who want to stay on site, Sergio's wife gives cooking lessons on traditional Piedmontese dishes AND there is also a restaurant where you can book provided well in advance. This way you can also taste the wines on site. American and Swiss customers regularly visit the restaurant. Wine exports go only to Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.

Sergio belongs to that generation of enologists who produce according to the traditional rules, in the sense that you should not expect a modern style of wine production. His wines can stay in the wine cellar for a long time.
