Langhe Rosso: the versatile and creative red wine from the Langhe hills
The versatile red wine that reflects the soul of the Langhe
Langhe Rosso is one of Piedmont’s most expressive and accessible red wines — a category that offers winemakers the freedom to express the beauty of the Langhe hills in their own unique way. Elegant yet full-bodied, structured yet approachable: Langhe Rosso combines the region’s great winemaking tradition with creativity and character.
Langhe Rosso is produced in the famous Langhe region of Piedmont — the cradle of legendary wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco — and is often a blend of some of the region’s most important grape varieties. This results in wines that are rich in fruit, have layered aromas and pair wonderfully with food.
No two bottles are exactly the same, and that is precisely what makes it so charming.
Grape variety
Langhe Rosso is typically made from a blend of classic Piedmontese grapes, usually:
Nebbiolo — provides elegance, structure and floral complexity
Barbera — adds freshness, lively acidity and juicy red fruit
Dolcetto — contributes softness, dark fruit and a gentle bitterness
Some producers also add small quantities of international grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah, which give the wine extra richness and depth.
This flexibility allows each producer to create a personal interpretation of the Langhe terroir.
Appearance
In the glass, Langhe Rosso usually displays a deep ruby red colour with vibrant purple reflections when young, which gradually evolves into garnet tones with age.
The rich colour reflects the wine’s depth, concentration and complexity.
Primary flavour notes
Langhe Rosso typically offers a layered and expressive flavour profile:
Sour cherries and ripe red cherries
Blackberries and plums
Rose petals and violets
Earthy and savoury notes
Liquorice, dried herbs and subtle spices
Depending on the producer and the blend, some wines may also display delicate hints of oak, vanilla or cocoa.
Aromatic profile
The nose is warm, generous and beautifully layered. Bright red and dark fruit aromas emerge from the glass first, followed by elegant floral notes typical of Nebbiolo. As the wine opens up, deeper aromas come to the fore — earthy undertones, dried herbs, liquorice and subtle spices.
Some vintages are fresh and fruity, whilst others are richer and more structured, but they all share the unmistakable character of the Langhe hills.
Taste
On the palate, Langhe Rosso is dry, medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced. The tannins are firm yet refined, giving the wine structure without overpowering the fruit. The fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and versatile at the table.
The finish is long, warm and complex, often with lingering notes of dark fruit, dried flowers, herbs and a subtle mineral freshness that reflects the limestone-rich soils of Piedmont.
Wine style
Dry red wine — elegant, structured and versatile, with excellent depth and ageing potential.
