The Nizza Docg is leaving the Consortium Barbera d'Asti e Vini Monferrato: it will have its own autonomous protection body.
It will be officially operational during 2026. Strategic decision after years of growth: more than one million bottles sold in 2024
Strategic choice. The Nizza Docg is leaving the Consorzio della Barbera d'Asti e dei Vini del Monferrato to create its own autonomous and independent protection body. The producers have decided this unanimously, marking a decisive and historic step for the future of the appellation, which is currently protected and promoted by the Consorzio, based in Costigliole d'Asti, and by the Associazione produttori del Nizza. "Shared choice," is emphasized in an official announcement, which aims to increase the strength of a young but internationally very well-known appellation.
New consortium operational by 2026
The start of the process to recognize the Consorzio del Nizza Docg was announced on Oct. 3. It should be recognized and operational during 2026, after completing the necessary technical and bureaucratic procedures. "A historic moment for all of us," said Stefano Chiarlo, president of the Associazione produttori del Nizza, recalling that in little more than twenty years, a small group of pioneers has grown into "an association that today includes nearly a hundred producers." The creation of the consortium would mark "a further step toward growth and responsibility." "I am moved and happy," Chiarlo continued, "because this choice does not only concern the present, but above all the future : it means giving Nizza Docg the means to continue growing, to preserve and promote our area, and to definitively establish it as one of the great Italian wine appellations."
The milestones and economic growth
In 20 years, Nizza Docg has become a reference appellation for Piedmont red wines. Production is growing steadily (1,093,000 bottles sold in 2024, +5 percent over the previous year), with exports at 55% and a presence in more than 40 international markets. The Associazione produttori del Nizza, founded in 2002 with only a few members, today has 95 members growing barbera grapes in the 18 municipalities surrounding Nizza Monferrato. After the recognition in 2000 of the sub-area within the Barbera d'Asti Superiore, accession to the Docg Barbera d'Asti followed in 2008 with stricter regulations. An important step was taken in 2014 with the official birth of the Nizza Docg appellation. The association has promoted zoning of the area, mapped the cru's and worked to create a close-knit group of producers. Now it is taking the next step with an autonomous protection body.
