Climate issues in Alto Piemonte: wine producers explain how they act to have a better climate

Climate issues in Alto Piemonte: wine producers explain how they act to have a better climate
Climate and Piedmontese viticulture
You can't open an (online) newspaper or the climate truants of Anuna De Wever & Co will be discussed. But what about climate issues in Piedmontese viticulture?
The wine region around Alba might be the logical choice for interviews with a few winegrowers about their approach, because of the popularity of the Nebbiolo's of Alba region.
Today we focus on winegrowing in Alto Piemonte, where the other Nebbiolo produces a wonderful result, harvest after harvest. All this from the perspective of the climatic conditions of 2017 & 2018 with tastings "on site" directly from the barrel.  This tasting showed that the Nebbiolo's from Alto Piemonte have an edge over what the lover of Nebbiolo wants to experience in the glass at the end of the ride, after bottling the wine.
The climate in Alto Piemonte is already very diverse due to temperature fluctuations. The variation between day and night temperature is much greater compared to the Nebbiolo from Alba & Co.  The result of the harvest is that the grape is still intact, round and full, while in Alba & Co the grapes that enjoy the sun all afternoon have to suffer a lot from this after 3 months of intense ripening before harvest (think of 2018, mid-July-July-August - 30 to 35 degrees afternoon temperatures).
The marketing manager of Rovellotti, Alberto Giovanni Chinaglia, who is active for both Rovelotti and Francesco Brigatti, informed us: "The use of chemicals to combat any form of disease in the vineyard is severely restricted or completely excluded. Even though our Rovellotti or Francesco Brigatti vineyards are not certified as organic, everything in the vineyard is organised as such.
Sometimes we use less chemicals than the permitted standard for organic viticulture. All forms of additional recognition that are different from the standard standard are subject to costs. So despite our particular attention to nature and the climate, it is more of an economic choice not to go for a more qualitative label".
Centovigne gives some more information.  In the vineyard we only use natural products to combat the disease. We do not even use products to prevent the proliferation of grass, but we do mow the grass alternately.  This way we will mow one row, another not to disturb the natural "habitat" of insects.
Enrico Crola of the Enrico Crola wine domain is short and powerful: "Anyone visiting our wine domain can immediately see everything we are realising in order to allow the climate and its evolution in our vineyards to evolve favourably. The cantina itself, with its entire construction, also bears witness to the ultimate tribute to the climate.
