Timorasso, also wine to ripe in your cellar, with Riesling notes

Timorasso, also wine to ripe in your cellar, with Riesling notes

Timorasso yields an intellectual wine, not unlike a very dry Riesling from the Nahe or the Rheinhessen. There is no denying the intensely mineral and herbal aromas and flavors of these wines.

Still the excitement about Timorasso and its wines is palpable, since the best wines are some of Italy’s most unique, interesting white wines.  The fact is, Timorasso has only resurfaced to international attention, and this thanks to the unique efforts of Walter Massa, a wine producer of the Colli Tortinesi who basically brought Timorasso back from oblivion all by himself.

Timorasso is very easy to recognize, since it has berries of different sizes within the same bunch, usually also at different stages of ripeness, asynchronous maturation of the berries is one of the reasons this variety is a pain to grow and that making great wines from it is difficult.

Timorasso’s acreage is reduced compared to the pre-phylloxera age,  when it rivaled Cortese as the most common white variety in Piedmont.  Now, Timorasso is associated with the Colli Tortinesi,  it is especially abundant in the northern, mountainous part of this DOC The northern Colli Tortonesi area is made up of a series of valleys: Val Curone, Val Grue, Val Ossona,  Val Borbera,  and Val Spinti are characterized by their unique wine production.

The wine is crisp,  high acid, and very mineral: it will remind you of very dry Riesling, with less sweet fruit when it is about five years old or more. Before that, it has aromas and flavors of white flowers, unripe white stone fruit, and bright citrus. High acidity and good aromatic persistence are typical.

Well know for Timorasso are in first line Walter Massa and La Colombera but we want to take the Timorasso wine to an even higher level:  Timorasso’s Highest Potential Level
