Dolcetto: Wine of the Year 2019

Dolcetto: Wine of the Year 2019

It has been announced several times and now it is official: 2019 will be the Year of Dolcetto. This was announced on Wednesday, February 20 in Turin by the regional councillor for agriculture, Giorgio Ferrero.

Despite the decisions of many producers, which have recently led to the abandonment of Dolcetto-based vineyards, this production sector as a whole remains important. There are three DOCGs (Dogliani, Diano d'Alba and Ovada), nine DOCs: Dolcetto d'Alba, by far the most widespread; Dolcetto d'Asti; Dolcetto d'Acqui and Dolcetto di Ovada; followed by Langhe Dolcetto, Colli tortonesi Dolcetto, Monferrato Dolcetto, Pinerolese Dolcetto and Piemonte Dolcetto.

Even wine-growing still has important figures: the various names bring together 3 838 hectares of vineyards (data for 2018). However, only 3,137 of these were claimed by the various denominations in the last harvest. The total production in the same year consists of 20,443,298 bottles.

These are undoubtedly important figures, but if we compare them with those of twenty years ago, when total wine production in Dolcetto was 5,649 hectares and the bottles were produced in excess of 27 million units.

In order to give shape and substance to the Year of Dolcetto, the Ministry of Agriculture of the region has tried to bring together organisations representing the production reality and to deal with the widespread promotion that has characterised many positive developments in the wine sector.

The operational branch seems to be Dmo Piemonte, the region's company for the promotion of tourism and agri-foods. Its task will be to "promote the event through its web and social communication channels, with activities such as making a video about the history of the vine, making a special web page on the site visitpiemonte.com and promoting the planned calendar. The main initiatives that will be devoted to wine in 2019 (e.g. Vinum in Alba or the institutional part of Vinitaly) will devote specific moments or thematic spaces to Dolcetto as a grape variety and wine.
