When can an organic wine be defined?

The European Regulation 203/2012, published in the Official Journal of the EU on 9 March 2012, has finally made it possible to regulate the organic wine sector, after several years of controversy.
The Regulation establishes new rules for the production of organic wine products, also describing the wine-making methods approved by the Standing Committee on Organic Farming (SCOF).
The new regulation also makes it possible for the European logo to appear on the label of enterprises that have been certified by an approved body.

The content of the regulation includes a series of restrictions on the use of certain oenological practices and adjuvants during the wine making process.
The regulation allows an organic producer to use about half of the amount of adjuvants that a conventional producer is allowed to use. The amount of sulphur dioxide in organic wines is one of the most debated issues in Italy, with the final EU decision on limits not being accepted by many Italian winemakers, as they are considered too high. It should not be forgotten that the climatic conditions of our country allow the production of wines with average amounts of sulphites lower than those produced by transalpine producers.

The regulation adopted sets the limits for total sulphur dioxide for dry organic red wines at a maximum of 100 mg/l, and for dry white wines at a maximum of 150 mg/l.
Based on what has been said so far, wine can therefore only be classified as 'organic' if in the vineyard: organic grapes are grown without the use of synthetic chemical substances (fertilisers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, pesticides in general) and without the use of genetically modified organisms.

At the winery: only oenological products and processes authorised by Regulation 203/2012 are used for vinification.
In any case, the winery needs a certificate of conformity from a certification body.
Of course, within the limits and provisions of the regulations, each certified organic producer will follow his own specific line of conduct and apply the oenological practices closest to the personal concept of "sustainable agriculture".
