GAJA buys vineyard on Mount Etnna

GAJA buys vineyard on Mount Etnna

Angelo GAJA points his arrows on Sicily and joins the Etna. His purchase of vineyards together with Alberto Graci, one of the most respected and talented wineries in Sicily, was actually in the making of 2015. His visit on the spot was made by Made In Piedmont Wines at the time. The picture with the article is dated May 18, 2015.

The arrival of Angelo Gaja is world-wide news in the world of wine. GAJA and Graci have set up a separate company and bought 21 hectares of land divided into two districts, of which a total of fifteen of the vineyards on the territory of Biancavilla, southwest slope, Etna Doc. For the first time, Angelo Gaja collaborates with another wine producer for the production of his wine and each holds about 50% of the shares in the company. It is also remarkable that GAJA invests on the southwestern side of the Etna.

A name for the new company is not provided yet, but what we know is that the 15 hectares of Nerello Mascalese will count into world production from the 2017 harvest. It is still all very recent news because the cantina has to be built, the places that were bought and those still to be bought must be mapped. In any case, both partners are very enthusiastic.

Gaja in his dynamic wine language: "We are going to realize everything step by step, not making hasty decisions. I wanted already for a long time to start a project on the mount Etna. Giacomo Tachis recounted me in scents and colors about the Etna, about what climatologically prevails about the action and reaction of all seasons in the vineyard. It made me feel like a challenge, because in Piedmont we are also dealing with climate-challenging situations. Even I would not have begun this adventure if I did not have a top producer like Alberto Graci on my side.

Gaja has already invested twice outside Piedmont. The first time this was achieved in Montalcino, Santa Pieve Restituta with over 11 hectares in 1994. The second time was in 1996 with Ca Marcanda located in Bolgheri with 110 hectares of vineyards. Recently, GAJA bought another 35 hectares of hazelnut trees in Trezzo Tinella for the budget of € 500,000 with the intention of producing white wines on the land.
