Nizza is celebrating its 7th Birtday

Nizza is celebrating its 7th Birtday
Nizza Docg, the Barbera Premium is 7 years old!
"It's not just a birthday party, a dinner to celebrate Nizza Docg's 7 candles. We are here, all together, to celebrate a new start. Gianni Bertolino is the outgoing president of Produttori Nizza, the association that unites the producers of the "premium" red 100% Barbera.
"A project that is growing year by year - continues Bertolino - in the first 5 months of 2021, the bottles produced have increased by 40%. The course has been set, now all that remains is to continue the journey".
A journey that began more than 20 years ago when a group of producers and oenologists decided to write the rules for a long-lasting, elegant wine. Today we have an appellation that is worth more than 20 euros a bottle on the shelf," says Gianni Bertolino, "A revolution for our grape variety. A motto of pride for the winegrowers of the 18 municipalities where Nizza Docg can be produced".
On Thursday evening, at La Signora in Rosso, the producers of Nizza Docg gathered for "Nata il 1o Luglio": the birthday party of Nizza Docg. "We would have liked to celebrate with the wine lovers," notes Bertolino, "we producers are here, ready to start again after a pandemic that has changed the scenarios of the world".
Among the guests Marco Protopapa, Regional Councillor for Agriculture. "We are celebrating a success - he says - a project that has been able to give value to wine and pride to a country. We are leaving the darkest moments behind us. You producers are returning to travel and it will be everyone's task to bring more and more fans and professionals here, in the country where everything originated.
A journey that will focus more and more on the vineyard. "It is the place where everything begins. This is where the quality chain begins, a chain that could never get off the ground without quality grapes. We have mapped out the estates of the 18 production municipalities. A master of the sector, Alessandro Masnaghetti, has mapped every twist and turn of this land. We know which ones are the cru of our denomination. We know how to choose one hill from another based on scientific data'.
The next step is to regulate zoning: "The possibility of indicating the cru or the municipality of production. This while continuing to focus on another internal 'differentiation': that of Nizza Riserva'.
Studies. Investments. Research. All to achieve one goal: to bring the 240 potential hectares of Nizza DOCG into full production. "This would mean 1.5 million bottles. A more than achievable goal considering that Nizza's wines are marketed at least two years after harvest". Partly thanks to investors from the Albese area. It's no secret that large wine houses have bought vineyards in the Nizza area," says Bertolino, "which has aroused interest and increased the value of the vineyards.
