Forty wineries associated with the Consortium producing 70 different labels of Alta Langa Docg; 90 winegrowers, three million kilos of grapes harvested from last summer's harvest on about 300 hectares of vineyards (1/3 chardonnay, 2/3 pinot noir), two and a half million bottles that will see the light of day in no less than 30 months, as required by the regulations, maturing in the cellars. The commercial value of the product can be estimated at around €100 million. This is, in figures, the current picture of the Alta Langa denomination.
In a year of uncertainty and complexity, the Consorzio Alta Langa has been able to reconsider itself and choose ambitious objectives, without losing its sense of planning, rigour and strong cohesion between the various players in the system.
The chairman of the Consortium, Giulio Bava, said: "In a period of less meeting opportunities, sales inevitably slow down, but Alta Langa is not afraid of a relapse: producing Alta Langa is a task for optimists, which teaches us the feeling of waiting. This 2020 of problems affects our designation relatively because the wines we have on the market today are those of 2015 and 2016 and they are all sold as production at that time was less than a million bottles".
In the meantime, a detailed study and research plan was approved and launched in 2020, which will lead to the creation of a technical dossier and a complete storyline for the designation. In collaboration with experts, important aspects will be studied and codified in depth, ranging from the myths and history of Piedmont's top bubble wines to the characteristics of the terroir; from the sustainability guidelines to the economic impact of the designation on the hills of Langa; from the preservation of bottles to serving techniques, wine tastings and pairings. The study will focus primarily on increasing awareness and culture of Alta Langa Docg among producers and will have a dissemination function.
For the winter photo shoot Alta Langa has chosen Turin. With the unmistakable atmosphere of the capital of Savoy, between the magic of the lights, the squares, the streets and the elegant architecture of the artist, the slope that sincerely embraces the course of the Po and the charm of the Alps with snow-capped peaks in the background, will be the protagonists of the shoot that the Consortium is currently taking. Each of the recordings, some forty in total, will be dedicated to a specific producer and his cuvée of Alta Langa. The photos will be published day after day on the Consortium's Facebook and Instagram profiles and will soon be grouped together in a gallery on the institutional website www.altalangadocg.com, thus nourishing and reinforcing the feeling of Piedmontese pride which, as in the early years of the Consortium, still inspires Alta Langa.
Alta Langa Docg is the traditional classical method of Piedmont. A denomination with a very long history: it was the first classical method produced in Italy, as early as the mid-nineteenth century, in the underground cathedrals that are now a UNESCO world heritage site. It is made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, alone or together, in different percentages; it can be white or rosé, brut or pas dosé and has a very long ageing period on the lees, as required by the strict regulations: at least 30 months. Alta Langa is exclusively vintage, i.e. the year of harvest is always on the label.
