Taverna – Barbaresco DOCG Duicrü – 2021
The vineyard:
Gaia-Principe & Cottà are two crus (MGA) of the municipality of Neive.
There are total 7 parcels of Nebbiolo, facing West (Cottà), East & North-East (Gaia-Principe) with the oldest vineyard planted on the top of the hill of the latter cru.
The vintage:
2021 is called the “year of the restart” after nearly 2 years of lockdowns. In spring various perturbations were recorded with temperatures dropping below zero in mid April and generally cooler weather than lately.
Abundant precipitations followed in summer and the risk of fungus diseases raised up with them. The thermoindexes in general were lower than the previous 2 years.
In terms of polyphenols 2021 initially fell into the “norm”, being similar to vintages like 2016 and 2017, but with aging the wines evolved faster and at bottling they were more similar to 2020.
The variety:
the Nebbiolo is the King of the Langhe, renouned all over the world for the unique, rich and ageworthy wines that it can produce.
It’s variety that shows best all the differences between the places where it grows. the wine: for this vintage we returned to the old method of separate aging of the two different crus until bottling. the name: Duicru in Piedmontese means «two crus». In this vintage the proportions between the two crus in the blend are 60% Gaia-Principe, 40% Cottà Nebbiolo Rosé.

Vinification:
The destemmed and crushed grapes from every parcel are vinified separately in vats of different material (oak, fibeglass, cement) with no temperature control with regular pump-overs and punch-downs. Postfermentation maceration for 15 days. 24 months in used barriques (used barriques and tonneau). Bottling 29 12 2023 - 1200 bottles of 0.75 l, alcohol volume 15%
