Taverna – Barbaresco DOCG Cotta - Senteundes 2021
The vineyard:
Cottà is a cru (MGA) of the municipality of Neive.
The parcel this wine comes from is our smallest & youngest vineyard.
Its partcilarity is that it’s planted exclusively with Nebbiolo Rosé, previously considered a clone of Nebbiolo (CN 111).
Recent genetic analyses though proved it to be its offspring (the second parent is unknown). the vintage: 2021 is called the “year of the restart” after nearly 2 years of lockdowns.
In spring various perturbations were recorded with temperatures dropping below zero in mid
April and generally cooler weather than lately. Abundant precipitations followed in summer and the risk of fungus diseases raised up with them.
The thermoindexes in general were lower than the previous 2 years. In terms of polyphenols 2021 initially fell into the “norm”, being similar to vintages like 2016 and 2017, but with aging the wines evolved faster and at bttling they were more similar to 2020.
The variety:
Nebbiolo Rosé was considered for quite a long time a clone of Nebbiolo as it produces wines of very similar characteristics, not typical for none of its numerous brothers. It has it’s particularities though, such as lighter color and abundant floral notes in the nose, as its name suggests. the wine: as in previous years only the best tonneau was selected for separate bottling. «Senteùndes» in Piedmontese language means 111 (the number of the old Nebbiolo clone, see above). the name: Sent-e-ùndes in Piedmontese means «111» - the number of the Nebbiolo Rosé clone
