THEFT OF 3,000 BOTTLES OF BAROLO FROM CONTERNO AND FANTINO – INCLUDING GINESTRA VIGNA SORI GINESTA
At 11:58 p.m. on the night of September 16–17, the security cameras at the “Conterno e Fantino” wine cellar—a “sanctuary” of Barolo in Monforte d’Alba—began to capture images of a man. He is wearing a balaclava and dark gloves. He is dressed entirely in black. He begins rummaging through the warehouse, starts a forklift, and operates it with ease. There are three other people with him. All are masked and unrecognizable. They move in unison, as if following a script. Not a single hiccup, not a single mistake.
A series of tasks carried out almost automatically. In three hours, they take just over 3,000 bottles of Barolo (vintages 2021 and 2022, including magnum bottles), including the Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra, one of the iconic wines from this winery, which has a rich history (nearly fifty years) and has passed down winemaking expertise and excellence from generation to generation.
