Barbera d’Alba Superiore – Vigna Cotta – 2024
The vineyard: Cottà is a big cru (MGA) of the municipality of Neive.
The two vineyards of Barbera are situated in a subzone named Tetti, on the both sides of the same slope, the steeper one facing West and the other - East.
The vintage:
challenging from an agronomic standpoint, specifically due to excessive rainfall.
On the one hand, it completely replenished the soil's water deficit, which had been severely affected after three consecutive years of extreme drought.
On the other hand, the frequency of rainfall during flowering significantly impacted yields in some areas. It was warmer than 2014 (the last year with such heavy rainfall), but without the peaks seen in 2021-22-23.
As a result, grape ripening was very uneven.
The variety: the Barbera is one of the most popular red varieties not only in Piedmont but also in all Italy. Thanks to its high acidity and low polyphenol content it has become the beloved every day wine of the Piedmontese households to pair with food.
The wine: we continue to follow the road towards a lighter Barbera: shorter aging in oak, lower alcohol and less dry extract (”slimmer” body), all this leads to a brght fruitiness combined with pleasant acidity. We even changed the color of the labels from black to white to mark that “transition” in style.
The name: Cottà is an official cru (MGA) of the Barbaresco zone. Wines made of varieties other than Nebbiolo can also be classified as cru, given that the DOC regulation permits it with a yield reduction of 10%. Obviously the vineyard has to be inside the cru limits. The cru name must be preceded by the word «vigna
